At Safehaven, we provide Residential and Respite Care Programs that enable children and youth with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs to live comfortably in their own communities, near family and friends, with the support of 24-hour care.

Download the Safehaven News, a Newsletter for Respite families of The Safehaven Project for Community Living Our goal is to support the entire family through educational programs and support services, while at the same time providing a positive and rewarding experience for the child or young adult.

With our Respite Care Program, we offer newborns to 18 years old with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs:

  • A good, safe time while away from families
  • Integration into the life of their communities
  • Opportunities for personal growth and experiences to the full extent of their capabilities

Respite Care is provided at 1173 Bloor Street West in Toronto, and on weekends at any of our residential locations.

NORTH YORK, ETOBICOKE, AURORA, WOODBRIDGE:
In addition to the Bloor Street West location, we have four private homes in the Greater Toronto Area - one each in North York, Etobicoke, Aurora and our newest in Woodbridge. Respite families typically choose to utilize the home nearest to them, but are free to make use of any of our locations.

Cost

Residential Program fees are $90.00 per month and include food and 24-hour supervision. Families must provide furniture and bedding for their child's room, clothing, cover all medical expenses (such as drugs, wheelchairs, ambulances and the dentist) plus general expenses (such as hair cuts, camp fees), and the cost of those same activities their child would enjoy living with them at home.

Respite Care fees are $40.00 for a 24-hour period or $20.00 for a partial day.

Please keep in mind: no family will be turned away if they are unable to afford Residential or Respite Care.

We invite any family wishing to find out more, or to have a tour of our facilities, to contact our Respite Coordinator at 416.535.8525 ext. 229.

Family Support

At Safehaven, families literally and figuratively get the key to their child's home. Unlike any other residential and respite organization, our families have full access to the homes and are asked to be an active part of their child's life.

In our Residential Program, families provide for their child as if they were living at home, while the Respite Program provides peace of mind and an interval of relief for the primary caregivers, giving them time for themselves and other family members.

Along with the Residential and Respite Programs, our family groups have also become a fundamental source of support.

Sibling and Extended Family Programs

At Safehaven, siblings and other extended family also find much needed support. In addition to education programs, we offer Support Groups. For more information, please call our Respite Coordinator at 416.535.8525 ext. 229.

Educational Seminars

From seminars on back-care to sleep and nutrition – we are always looking for new topics that would be of interest to families who have children with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs. Please feel free to contact our Respite Coordinator at 416-535-8525, ext. 229, with any of your ideas.
