From one woman's search for suitable care for her multiply disabled child, to one of North America's leading organizations for respite and residential care, The Safehaven Project for Community Living is a success story worth reading.

Our Beginnings

In Toronto in 1985, a woman by the name of Marlene Whittaker was told her daughter could no longer stay at Bloorview Children's Hospital. Being a mother of a child who faced severe physical, mental and medical challenges, Marlene was determined to find an alternative.

After seeing a television broadcast on the Home Again Project later that year, Marlene contacted the president, who offered her services to help Marlene form a parent group. Marlene's parent group began to meet regularly, and in May of 1986 were introduced to families at the Christopher Robin Nursing Home.

Together, these six families began to envision The Safehaven Project for Community Living. A mere year and a half later, the families had paid for the incorporation process and in December of 1987 held their first Board of Directors meeting.

Our Commitment

During Safehaven's 18 years of operation, we have become a leader in providing residential and respite care for children and youth with multiple disabilities and complex medical needs. This leadership continues to be demonstrated through the quality of our care, innovative programs and advocacy initiatives. Through these endeavours, we strive to ensure that every child in Toronto and Central East Region gets the care and opportunities they need.

Our Financial Stability

We are proud to say that The Safehaven Project for Community Living continues to be a viable charity year-in, year-out, with 96¢ from every dollar donated going to the children.

Through operational funding from the Ministries of Children & Youth and Community & Social Services, and donations from caring organizations and individuals, we are able to provide a higher quality of life for the children. We also continue to maintain and expand partnerships with other boards and organizations to better serve families and their children, and to forge additional partnerships and joint ventures to enhance the services Safehaven offers.
